According to rumors, Newcastle United is aiming to replace Chris Wood with Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
According to the Sun, the 25-year-old is “near the top of Eddie Howe’s list of targets.” Howe is looking for a mobile target man now that Wood is close to signing a loan-to-buy deal with Nottingham Forest.
Calvert-Lewin has had a difficult first half of the season, appearing in just nine Premier League games and scoring just once owing to a number of ailments.
However, it appears that he still has a large following on Tyneside. The Telegraph reported that he was on Howe’s radar before Alexander Isak arrived, while The Athletic revealed last summer that Dan Ashworth had also inquired about a switch before suffering a knee injury in August.
His stock has dropped in the last 18 months, however, he did score 36 goals in 2019/20 and 2020/21.
Here’s what a source in the recruitment industry informed The Sun about our alleged interest:
“Calvert-Lewin is near the top of Newcastle’s list of objectives.
“They were interested in him last summer, and they still are.
“They believe he has the potential to be a striker who can help them go to the next level in both the league and in Europe.”
Calvert-Lewin would be an upgrade over Wood if he were totally fit – he’s six years younger and more mobile – but his injury record is a major issue given we already have Callum Wilson on our books.
