Eddie Howe wisely decided to stop Newcastle’s best young midfielder from leaving the club

Is Newcastle United about to make a mistake with Elliot Anderson?

Eddie Howe recently stated that Eliott Anderson will remain at the club beyond the January transfer window, despite suggestions that he may depart on loan, although a lack of playing time may stifle his growth and development.

After a fantastic loan spell at Bristol Rovers last season, there was a buzz around the then-19-year-old as he returned to his parent club, with a number of clubs keen to sign him for the next season.

Despite the interest, Howe remained steadfast in his desire to retain him in and near the first-team to help with squad depth and provide him with Premier League experience.

However, after only a few substitute appearances and some rather flat cup games where he plainly tried too hard, a drop down to the Championship and some regular playing time could be precisely what he needs.

He does not make the 25-man squad and has the versatility to play both in midfield and on the left side of the front three, but I believe he needs a loan period in the second half of the season.

Here’s what Howe had to say on the matter last week:

“He’s very valued by us. He’s had a number of niggles over the last couple of months which have prevented him from being involved more.

“He’s got a valuable role to play with us between now and the end season – we certainly won’t be loaning him anywhere.”

After spending every day with the youngster in training, Howe will know what is best for him, but it’s tough to imagine Anderson getting meaningful minutes in a side that has been a consistent unit all season.

Hopefully, he gets another shot in the second half of the season and begins to play with more confidence and excitement, as we saw during Bristol Rovers’ promotion run.
