According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Newcastle United‘s primary target is Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin as they plan a major squad overhaul in the summer to take the next step toward becoming a mega juggernaut in world football.
The Magpies have been linked with a move for the Everton striker previously. They were reportedly interested in the show last season as well.
In fact, Calvert-Lewin was linked with a move away from Everton throughout the previous season, with Arsenal showing interest before signing Gabriel Jesus. However, there does not appear to be much buzz surrounding his potential exit at the moment, which could be attributed to his injury issues and underwhelming last two seasons.
The 25-year-old is in his seventh season at Goodison Park, where he has had two excellent scoring seasons in 2019/20 and 2020/21, scoring 29 of his 46 Premier League goals.
Despite his lack of production in recent months, Calvert-Lewin has 11 senior international caps for England. Given Everton’s struggles, he may be viewed as a declining asset, one that the Toffees may look to offload in the summer in order to provide Sean Dyche with a sizable war chest to replenish the squad based on his needs if he can keep them afloat this season.
Despite failing to reach the heights of his peak seasons, Calvert-Lewin appears to be still very much in Newcastle United’s sights.
If Newcastle makes it to Europe next season, which seems likely given their current push for Champions League qualification.
That would imply that they will require a larger squad with a variety of options. So, after offloading Chris Wood in January, it won’t be surprising to see them pursue another striker in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Goals have been difficult to come by in recent weeks as Premier League clubs adjust to the Magpies’ newfound prominence. Only two goals in the last five Premier League games have caused concern at St. James’ Park. Earlier this season, Newcastle couldn’t stop scoring, winning convincingly against Fulham, Brentford, Southampton, and Leicester City.
The goals have dried up at the worst possible time, as evidenced by another blank in the Carabao Cup final. Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron have struggled to keep their early-season purple patches going, while Allan Saint-Maximin and Alexander Isak are still adjusting physically after long injury layoffs.
Eddie Howe‘s team could benefit from more potent offensive firepower. And bringing in a clutch striker like Calvert-Lewin for a reasonable fee would be a wise investment, as he will bring aerial prowess and cunning poaching skills inside the opposition box.
Newcastle also has an elite crosser in skipper Kieran Trippier, who can combine with his compatriot to devastating effect. As a result, it will be fascinating to see how this story develops during the summer transfer window.
