Fabrizio Romano confirms Newcastle at the verge of announcing second signing

Newcastle expects to be able to reveal their second signing of the summer window by the end of this week.

According to The Telegraph (subscription required), Leicester City’s dynamic Harvey Barnes is on his way to Tyneside to join Eddie Howe’s revolution at St. James’ Park.

Barnes had been expected to move to east London for some time, as West Ham had targeted him as one of their priority targets.

However, it now appears that any deal was contingent on the Declan Rice trade with Arsenal going through.

It’s been nine days since that agreement was reached, but it still hasn’t been completed, and The Sun notes how frustrated the Hammers have been with the entire situation.

Not least because it means they’ve lost Barnes, with Newcastle benefiting from their loss.

There are only four weeks until the start of the 2023/24 Premier League season, and despite West Ham winning the Europa Conference League final, it appears that the whole transfer budget will be funded by Rice’s sale.

That’s characteristic of east Londoners, and it’s unlikely to bring them very far given that they’ll be juggling a Europa League campaign as well as domestic responsibilities.

David Moyes and David Sullivan will undoubtedly be hoping for good news shortly.
