Fabrizio Romano: Newcastle target verbally agrees to make summer switch on a five years deal

According to reports, a Newcastle target has verbally agreed to a five-year contract with another club, allowing the Magpies to step up their pursuit of the Leicester ace.

Since the Saudi-led takeover, the majority of Newcastle’s successful signings have come on the defensive side of the ball.

Eddie Howe is still waiting for the best performances from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon. However, players such as Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman, and Dan Burn have made an immediate impact and all have a place in Newcastle’s strongest eleven.

Unsurprisingly, Newcastle has excelled in their own half, conceding the fewest goals of any Premier League team this season (15). Arsenal and Chelsea both have the second-worst defenses, allowing eight goals or more (23).

Newcastle, on the other hand, has struggled to find the back of the net. Indeed, they’ve dropped to fifth place in the league after a seven-game losing streak. In that time, the Magpies have only scored three goals.

A creative midfielder is thought to be on the club’s radar this summer, with Eintracht Frankfurt’s Daichi Kamada being mentioned.

The Japan international, 26, will become a free agent at the end of the season, and Newcastle are among the clubs interested in signing him, according to 90min.

Kamada plays in an attacking midfield role for Frankfurt and has 13 goals and five assists this season across all competitions.

Newcastle was labeled as ‘confident,’ but according to Fabrizio Romano, their hopes have been dashed.

Borussia Dortmund are ‘closing in’ on the free agent swoop, according to the transfer guru, after Daichi Kamada’verbally agreed’ to a five-year contract.

Romano stated that ‘three more clubs’ had made approaches, but he did not confirm whether Newcastle was one of them.

In any case, unless a dramatic late U-turn occurs, Daichi Kamada will join Dortmund in June.

Newcastle will be emboldened to pursue Leicester City’s James Maddison as a result of the transfer failure.

Maddison is the same age as Kamada, and the Magpies have had bids for the playmaker turned down twice since the Saudis took over. According to Sky Sports, their most recent offer was worth £50 million last summer.

Leicester refused to budge, though the story may have changed a year later.

Maddison will have just one year left on his contract at the end of the season, so the summer window will be Leicester’s last chance to get full market value for their talisman.

The transfer miss is unlikely to deter Newcastle who may now be emboldened to pursue Leicester City’s James Maddison.

Maddison is the same age as Kamada and the Magpies have twice seen bids for the playmaker knocked back since the Saudis took charge. Their latest offer last summer, per Sky Sports, was understood to be worth £50m.

Leicester refused to budge, though the story could be different one year later.

Maddison will have just one year remaining on his deal at season’s end and as such, the summer window will represent Leicester’s last chance to extract full market value for their talisman.
