Trevoh Chalobah, a Newcastle United target, could still join with Bayern Munich today.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah could sign for Bayern Munich today, as the German club is pushing for a straight loan move for the 24-year-old.
However, until this agreement between Bayern Munich and the Blues is signed, sealed, and delivered, Newcastle United may still contemplate a bid for Chalobah’s services.
Chalobah has been a target for Newcastle since early July, according to 90min. If the versatile £50,000-a-week striker is suddenly available on a temporary contract with no commitment to buy, he may be a sensible, low-risk late addition to Eddie Howe’s side.
If Newcastle are to try and make a move for Chalobah, then they need to act fast. Another challenge, on top of the time factor, is that the player may already have his heart seat on a move to Germany.
Equally, Chelsea could prove unwilling to allow Chalobah to join a direct Premier League rival. The west London outfit would be likely to offer Newcastle far less favourable terms than Bayern Munich are after, at the very least.
With Champions League football on the horizon for the Magpies, having adequate strength in depth will be more important than ever. Chalobah has the quality to step into a midfield role as well, if required, on top of his central defensive duties. He would also arguably represent an upgrade on club captain Jamaal Lascelles.
Howe has made defensive acquisitions this Summer, with Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall arriving at St James’ Park. The manager may well feel he is already well stocked in this area, but it is likely that he would still jump at the chance to reinforce his rearguard further if a bargain opportunity presents itself today.
