As the transfer window closes, Leicester City midfielder is regarded as the Magpies’ top priority.
Newcastle supporters were asked to rank 13 potential January signings in order of priority through our Rank Your Targets tool. And despite a clamoring for Fresneda, he finished some way behind fans’ number one target, Leicester City midfielder James Maddison.
Maddison’s World Cup injury has seen him fall off the radar somewhat following a summer of intense speculation surrounding a move away from the King Power. With his Foxes contract ending in 2024 this window is one of the last opportunities for Leicester to demand a sizable fee for the England international.
Newcastle United‘s transfer window has yet to heat up, with plenty of names linked but no bodies coming through the door. Newcastle is reportedly out of the running to sign Real Valladolid’s in-demand right-back Ivan Fresneda.
The 18-year-old was regarded as the ideal successor to Kieran Trippier, but he is now expected to choose between Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund.
Magpies fans, who ranked Fresneda second on their list of January transfer window priorities, will be disappointed by the news.

Although talk of a move has died down, Newcastle fans continue to place him at the top of the club’s transfer priorities. Sergej Milinkovi-Savi of Lazio is another name that has been heavily linked with a move to the northeast, finishing just behind Fresneda in our poll.
With Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Barcelona rumored to be interested in the Serbian, Magpies fans may be disappointed.
It also appears to be a no-go for Youssoufa Moukoko, who is ranked fourth in our results. Erling Haaland dubbed the Germany international “the biggest talent in the world,” and he recently signed a new contract with Borussia Dortmund, committing himself to the Bundesliga club until 2026.
Another Leicester City player, Youri Tielemans, is seen as a more realistic option, and he finished fifth, just ahead of Borussia Mönchengladbach‘s Marcus Thuram. On the other end of the spectrum, signing Napoli winger Hirving Lozano was regarded as the lowest priority, with the Mexican finishing dead last in our poll.
And only one place above him was Mattheus Franca, implying that there will be little joy on Tyneside if the reported early talks with the Flamengo teenager lead to a January signing.
