After finishing in the top four of the Premier League, the Magpies will compete in the Champions League in 2023-24.
And, knowing they’ll be competing against Europe’s greatest clubs, the club has been busily strengthening the first squad during the summer transfer window.
Sandro Tonali has already signed after Newcastle reached a £70 million (TM) agreement with AC Milan, and while additional arrivals are expected, Eddie Howe must also choose which players are not in his plans.
And, according to a recent Football Insider article, captain Jamaal Lascelles is unlikely to play much next season.
Lascelles has battled for game time since the rise of Fabian Schar and Sven Botman, who signed from Lille last year, and started only two Premier League games last season.
With only one year left on his contract, the 29-year-old is unlikely to be handed a new term and must now decide whether to make a transfer this summer in pursuit of regular football, or to wait and leave St James’ Park as a free agent this time next year.
