Leeds United defender finally opens up summer transfer plans to join Newcastle United

Robin Koch is reportedly a target for Premier League rivals Newcastle United, and the Leeds defender revealed his admiration for the St James’ Park atmosphere in an interview with Spox.

Koch, one of the few consistent performers for a Leeds side that has been anything but consistent throughout 2022/23, is almost certain to draw a lot of attention this summer, regardless of whether Javi Gracia’s side stays up or goes down.

The German international’s contract expires in 15 months.

Newcastle are considering a low-cost move, and BILD reporter Christian Falk told Caught Offside that a summer move from West Yorkshire to Tyneside is very much a possibility.

On New Year’s Eve, Koch kept a rare clean sheet as Leeds drew 0-0 at Champions League-chasing Newcastle. And the atmosphere at St James’ Park clearly had an impact on him, with the former Freiburg goalkeeper naming Newcastle as one of the best away grounds in the Premier League.

“The first thing that comes to mind is Newcastle,” says Koch.

“Old Trafford was good too, but it’s a derby against us too.

Otherwise, I would mention Liverpool and Aston Villa stadiums.

Meanwhile, Koch admits that ‘initial talks’ about a new contract at Leeds have begun. His future, however, will most likely be determined by what happens between now and the end of May. Koch hopes to force his way back into the Germany squad ahead of Euro 2024 on home soil, and relegation to the Championship would be fatal to his chances.

“During the season, I want to avoid thinking about the future as much as possible.

Initial discussions are currently taking place between the club and my advisor,” Koch adds.

“I will deal with it at the end of the season and during the summer break” (my future). My attention is now entirely focused on our upcoming games and goals.

“I am certain we will not be relegated. Our ranking in the table does not accurately reflect our performance. We have a lot of good games, but we never score.”
