Newcastle to make final decision to sign Man Utd midfielder as agent preparing for negotiation

Newcastle United is allegedly in talks with Manchester United about signing midfielder Scott McTominay.

This season, the Scotland international has slid down the pecking order, sparking doubts about his future at Old Trafford.

McTominay is presently competing for a spot in the Manchester United midfield alongside Bruno Fernandes, Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, and Fred.

The 26-year-old has started only 11 of his 24 competitive outings this season, though he did play the entire 3-2 loss at Arsenal on Sunday.

Erik ten Hag explained why he chose to start McTominay in the Premier League for the first time since the club’s 6-3 loss to local rivals Manchester City on October 2.

“I’m certain this is the best solution,” Ten Hag stated. “Scott can do the job, he’s a wonderful player for our squad. He’s an excellent player for our squad, and I believe he’s progressing well.

“I had something in mind for where Fred may have played, a role similar to last week versus City, but we can modify if necessary during the game.”

Despite starting against Arsenal, McTominay’s inability to get continuous game time has piqued the interest of Newcastle, who are aiming to improve their midfield during the current transfer window.

Newcastle has held conversations with Manchester United about completing a deal this month, according to The Athletic.

The Magpies were interested in McTominay last summer, and he remains a goal for Eddie Howe’s side as they look to qualify for the Champions League.

However, a January departure for McTominay is unlikely, with Man United unwilling to sanction a sale this month.

While a transfer is not currently viable, the Magpies may examine the matter in the summer, according to the article.

McTominay has 18 goals and five assists in 194 appearances for the club and is under contract until June 2025, which United can extend by another year.

Newcastle prepares to face Southampton in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-finals on Tuesday, while Manchester United will face Nottingham Forest a day later.
