Newcastle were reportedly tracking Peterborough United defender Ronnie Edwards in the summer transfer window, and have now been told the price they will need to pay to sign him.
The 20-year-old has caught the eye in League One, with a number of Premier League sides eyeing him up, and it was revealed in August that Newcastle had sent scouts to watch him.
The centre-back could still be of interest to Eddie Howe in January, should he wish to add youth and depth to his squad, and he could now be available at a bargain price.
Edwards’ price tag revealed
A report from Peterborough Today has now revealed that the defender could be available for £6m, making him a potential bargain buy given his talent.
Newcastle’s depth at centre-back isn’t the strongest, with Jamaal Lascelles the only other natural option to replace either Fabian Schar or Sven Botman, unless Dan Burn moves into the centre.
Edwards could therefore be a cheap investment who can add depth and likely add quality for the future, should Newcastle seek to sign him in the January window.
Sporting director Dan Ashworth rates Edwards highly, having scouted him during his time at Brighton, and he has even praised him in the past.
“We know all about your boy, the reports at Brighton I got. He is a Rolls Royce of a centre-half,” Dan Ashworth once told Peterborough Chairman Darragh MacAnthony.
“But, we, Newcastle, are looking at the attacking end of the pitch at the moment. But he said ‘Barry, absolute Rolls Royce. Every scout report that went into Brighton, unbelievable.”
Edwards has played in every minute of Peterborough’s League One campaign so far this season, scoring once in 12 games, and despite his young age, he has already clocked up 101 appearances for his side.
Although this may be something of a surprise signing in January, it could be a shrewd one for a huge long-term gain.
