West Ham United are reportedly ready to recruit Leicester City winger Harvey Barnes before Newcastle United.

Despite his side battling relegation from the Premier League for the bulk of the season, the former Barnsley and West Bromwich Albion loanee has managed to shine, scoring 12 goals and giving three assists in 39 games across all competitions.

Barnes was surprisingly left out of Dean Smith’s starting eleven when his side battled their way to a goalless draw against Newcastle on Monday night, as the Magpies claimed the point they needed to secure a place in next season’s Champions League.

Smith addressed his decision to list Barnes and another United transfer target James Maddison as replacements before of the game, telling Sky Sports: “I had to think long and hard about it.” When I was watching the (Newcastle) game against Brighton, the first two goals were set pieces, and I wished there was another centre-back in the lineup. They (Barnes and Maddison) handled it professionally. I want kids to be disappointed if they don’t play, but I also want them to understand why.

“With Kelechi Iheanacho and Jamie Vardy, we’re not coming here just to avoid defeat, but to win.” We also want to generate chances and compete against a talented squad. The good news is that it wasn’t in our hands before the weekend began, but it is now. We want it to stay that way.”

Barnes and Maddison could be recalled to Smith’s starting eleven as City look to keep their Premier League hopes alive by beating West Ham United at home on Sunday afternoon – but even three points may not be enough to keep City in the top flight if relegation rivals Everton beat Bournemouth at Goodison Park.

Barnes is expected to be given a chance to return to the Premier League if Leicester are relegated, and Newcastle are long-term admirers of the brilliant winger. However, according to The Guardian, West Ham United will make a move for the 25-year-old after deciding to stick with manager David Moyes. The former Sunderland manager is expected to be supported in the transfer market this summer, and a move for Barnes might coincide with a deal for Fulham’s Joao Palhinha and Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse.
