Newcastle United’s injury situation has been updated ahead of Manchester United’s visit to St James’ Park.
Eddie Howe expects the majority of his Newcastle United squad to be available for Sunday’s Premier League match against Manchester United (kick-off 4:30pm).
Several Magpies players were injured heading into the international break, but the two-week break, during which Howe’s team spent six days in Dubai, allowed most to recover.
The Newcastle head coach confirmed Fabian Schar, Nick Pope, Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin are expected to be in contention this weekend.
Sven Botman has recovered from food poisoning, which forced him to withdraw from the Netherlands squad last week, and Joelinton has served his two-match suspension.
Anthony Gordon, who has missed the last two games due to an ankle injury, could also return. However, Miguel Almiron and Emil Krafth were ruled out.
Here is the complete injury transcript from Howe’s press conference this morning:
“I believe it has benefited some players.” It allowed us to rest a couple who were suffering from niggles and problems.
“Fabian [Schar] is a prime example of someone who has played through pain and various things.” It arrived just in time for him and Anthony Gordon to work on his injury and get him closer to returning.”
“I don’t have an answer right now.” On Wednesday, he participated in a very limited amount of training. We’ll see how he reacts to that today.”
So, how about Nick Pope?
“After the Wolves games, Nick felt a problem in his thigh. He didn’t train in preparation for the Nottingham Forest game, but he played through the pain barrier.
“He didn’t train in Dubai, but he did train this week, so the signs are promising.”
How great is it to have Joelinton back?
“It’s huge. Joe’s a huge presence, not just physically but the other lads know how good of a player he is. So to have him back among the squad is a huge boost for us. He’s been very consistent this season, a huge player for us, very versatile.
“To have him back is a big lift but as you say, the other players in his absence have performed very well. It’s great to have competition for players.”
Are Allan Saint-Maximin & Callum Wilson OK?
“Callum has received training.” Maxi has received training. They’re both in good spirits and in good form.”
“I believe Sven got food poisoning and had a nasty bout of illness.” I don’t think he was alone in the Holland camp; there were a few other players who were going through the same thing.
“He left the camp early in order to get back up to speed.” He’s been training with us since he got back, so he should be fine.”
