With only 12 games remaining in the current Premier League season, clubs, agents, and players are expected to make moves now to lay the groundwork for any summer transfers, and one £71m-rated star could find himself in Newcastle’s starting lineup next season.
Eddie Howe’s side, whether they qualify for the Champions League or not, should find that most players are financially accessible thanks to the money provided by the club’s owners, the Saudi Public Investment Fund.
One area where the Magpies could potentially improve is up front, and while Callum Wilson has performed admirably for the club, it’s debatable whether he’s a long-term option.
To that end, CBS journalist Ben Jacobs suggested on the NUFC Matters podcast that AS Roma striker Tammy Abraham, who is valued at £70.8 million by The Athletic (subscription required), is open to a move to St. James’ Park.
Although a return to Chelsea remains a possibility, with Maria Granovskia negotiating a £70.8m buy back clause for buy-back return, it’s difficult to see how the 25-year-old would force his way into Graham Potter’s squad.
Being a Newcastle number nine has obvious cachet for a player, with the Toon Army having enjoyed watching the likes of Jackie Milburn, Malcolm McDonald, and Alan Shearer over the years.
Abraham would become an instant hero in the north east if he could follow in their footsteps.
