Newcastle United finally beat Chelsea and Bayern Munich in race to sign Marcus Thuram

According to The Athletic, Newcastle United may ‘consider’ selling Allan Saint-Maximin if a suitable offer comes in.

Saint-Maximin impressed during Newcastle’s first four games of the season, and he was named man of the match in last August’s 3-3 draw with Manchester City.

However, after scoring a spectacular volley to salvage a 1-1 draw at Wolves the following week, his season was thrown into disarray when he suffered a hamstring injury that sidelined him for over a month.

He suffered a separate muscle injury shortly after returning, and Eddie Howe spent nearly two months easing him back into the first team fold.

Although Saint-Maximin has played regularly for the Magpies in recent weeks, speculation about his future has not subsided, particularly in light of criticism from Jose Enrique and Jamie Redknapp.

Enrique has chastised Saint-Maximin for his lack of effort off the ball, while Redknapp believes he is a difficult player to play with.

Chris Waugh of The Athletic wrote on Thursday: “When he plays, the Frenchman still provides a unique attacking threat, but his off-the-ball work means he is not a fit for Howe’s pressing style. If Newcastle receives a reasonable offer for the 26-year-old, they may consider it.”

Marcus Thuram

Chelsea and Bayern Munich are ‘not interested’ in signing Marcus Thuram from Newcastle United when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Thuram is set to become a free agent in the summer after being linked with a move to St James’ Park during the January transfer window. According to a February report from Calciomercato, Newcastle are ahead of their English counterparts in the race to sign Thuram, though they face stiff competition from Inter Milan.

However, according to Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, their chances of signing him have improved as both Chelsea and Bayern have dropped out of the running.

“He still wants to leave Gladbach as a free agent in the summer,” Plettenberg tweeted. Bayern Munich is still uninterested in signing him. Understandably, Chelsea is uninterested as well.

“Thuram and Chelsea are not attractive. It’s worth noting that Chelsea was very interested in the winter and had considered a move, as previously reported. They now have other plans for that position.”
