Newcastle United join race to sign £60m Chelsea defender on a swoop deal this summer

Newcastle United are allegedly interested in signing Chelsea wide defender Marc Cucurella during the summer transfer window.

According to the Daily Mirror, Newcastle United has expressed interest in Marc Cucurella. The Spaniard has failed to justify the £60 million investment made in him last summer. The Magpies, on the other hand, see the Chelsea wideman as a long-term left-back solution.

Marc Cucurella has had a roller-coaster journey since moving to England two years ago. The 24-year-old joined Brighton & Hove Albion from Getafe in August 2021 and had an outstanding debut season. He was so good that he was named the club’s Player of the Year for 2021/22. Furthermore, Chelsea lured him away from Brighton last summer.

The West London club shelled out £60 million to secure Cucurella’s services last summer. But the Spanish international has not justified Chelsea’s heavy outlay. And he turned out 33 times across all competitions this past season, chipping in with three assists. But despite the player’s struggles, his stock remains fairly high, with Newcastle United interested in him. At Newcastle United, Eddie Howe used Dan Burn as his first-choice left-back this past season. And Matt Targett’s stature has reduced, as he was a backup option for the Newcastle United boss. But Howe wants a full-back better suited to his demands, compelling the Tyneside club to scour the market.

As a result, the Magpies have shown interest in a number of left-backs, including Kieran Tierney. While the Arsenal defender will be a far superior alternative, Cucurella has emerged as a realistic possibility. Newcastle United will seek a low-cost deal for the Chelsea wideman.

Meanwhile, the Blues are prepared to let go of the 24-year-old. However, Chelsea are unlikely to regain anything close to the £60 million they invested for the Spaniard. And if Cucurella can recapture his Brighton form at St. James’ Park, Newcastle United will have gotten a steal.
