Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is drawing up his summer shortlist for talent for the 2023/24 season
Newcastle United have hit the headlines again in Italy after being linked with Napoli goal machine Victor Osimhen.
A claim in this morning’s Corriere dello Sport suggests that United have made an £88million enquiry for the Nigerian number 9 who has blasted home 25 goals this season for the Serie A champions-elect. Osimhen has been a sensation in the Italian top-flight since arriving from Lille in 2020.
Osimhen had previously been scouted by the Magpies prior to the takeover, but he made a £60 million move to Naples from Ligue 1 side Lille, with Rafa Benitez having watched the forward during his Charleroi days, but his valuation has risen in recent times. Since leaving Lille, Osimhen has piqued the interest of Premier League clubs such as Chelsea and Manchester United.
Newcastle are compiling their own summer shopping list, but Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has previously told journalists that he will not sell the Nigeria international for less than £150 million.
The 24-year-old is under contract with Napoli until 2025, and De Laurentiis recently stated, “I am very good at making contracts, so keeping them here won’t be a problem.”
“However, you should never say never.” You never know when you’ll get an offer you can’t refuse. To me, they will shine for a long time.”
When asked about potential shortlists, Howe said, “It’s a difficult one. There’s no concrete assurance whether the club will be in Europe or not next season.” Depending on what we accomplish.
“If we achieve anything, it will have an impact on our income.” Financial Fair Play is a difficult thing to determine what we will and will not be able to do. All I can say is that FFP will have an impact on us again, regardless of the competition.”
