Following their Carabao Cup final defeat, Newcastle United now faces the unenviable task of traveling to Manchester City.
Newcastle United was unable to win at Wembley, and must now pick themselves up in preparation for a Premier League clash with Manchester City.
The Magpies will be up against it at the Etihad, and Howe may see this as an ideal opportunity to rotate his side. Some players are clearly in desperate need of rest, which will hopefully come on Saturday.
The most visible change Howe will make at the Etihad will be the recall of Nick Pope. He has completed his suspension and will take over in goal for Loris Karius. Despite the fact that the Germans performed admirably,
However, Pope’s return isn’t the only expected change at the back. Matt Targett is back to full fitness, and we expect him to make his first Toon appearance since November.
The £15 million man could fill in at left-back, but we believe he will replace Fabian Schar. The centre-back was hit in the head early in the Carabao Cup final but did not leave the field.
With Targett replacing Schar, Dan Burn will move into the middle, forcing Sven Botman to play as the right-sided centre half.
Joe Willock was only fit enough to sit on the bench at Wembley, but he is expected to start at the Etihad.
We’ve brought in the 23-year-old to replace Sean Longstaff, who was taken off at halftime last week for tactical reasons. However, he is a player who requires rest, and Willock will add more running power to our midfield.
Bruno Guimaraes should be available to start.
He suffered an ankle injury against Manchester United and is hoping to recover in time.
Anthony Gordon’s first appearance in Newcastle starting lineup
Newcastle is currently struggling for goals, which is why Howe should rotate his front three.
Miguel Almiron is likely to need a rest, which could give Anthony Gordon his first Toon start.
Since his big money move in January, he’s been a standout off the bench.
Up front, Alexander Isak will take over for Callum Wilson. When he came on at Wembley, the 23-year-old was excellent, while Wilson was noticeably ‘quiet’.
Aside from recalling Pope, this is the one change Howe should make against Manchester City.
Predicted XI vs Man City: Pope; Trippier, Botman, Burn, Targett; Willock, Bruno, Joelinton; Gordon, Isak, Saint-Maximin.
