Newcastle United are ‘hoping’ to sign star midfielder Bruno Guimaraes to a ‘new contract,’ according to journalist Pete O’Rourke of GIVEMESPORT.
Since joining the Magpies in January 2022, the 25-year-old has been in impressive form, and he has been linked with a move to a number of top clubs across Europe as a result.
According to Mundo Deportivo, La Liga giants Real Madrid are considering an offer for Guimaraes as a potential replacement for Casemiro.
However, it has been reported that Juventus sees the Brazil international as a potential successor to the injury-prone Paul Pogba, and that free-spending Chelsea is also among his potential suitors.
Newcastle, on the other hand, appear determined to keep Guimaraes for the foreseeable future as they look to continue their progress under manager Eddie Howe.
According to a recent Telegraph report, the north east outfit is on the verge of reaching a new long-term agreement with the South American.
Guimaraes’ current £160,000-per-week contract is not set to expire until the summer of 2026, but signing new terms could deter interest from elsewhere.
What did O’Rourke have to say about Guimaraes?
When asked about Guimaraes’ future, O’Rourke told GMS that he’seems happy’ at Newcastle and that missing out on the Champions League will not be a problem.
“I think Bruno seems happy at Newcastle,” he said. Newcastle are on the right track, and I expect them to strengthen their squad again in the summer in order to compete for the Champions League if they miss out this season.
“So, they’re hoping to bind him to a new contract, and I’m sure Bruno sees the long-term project at Newcastle that even if they don’t win this season, they’ll be back in there challenging next season and for seasons after that.”
Newcastle signed Guimaraes from Lyon for £40 million, and he has quickly established himself as a fan favorite.
In 44 appearances for Eddie Howe’s side, the creative talent has nine goals and four assists, helping them reach the Carabao Cup final and compete for a place in the top four of the Premier League.
Given Guimaraes’ talent, it’s not surprising that he’s attracting interest from Real Madrid and Chelsea, but it would be surprising to see him leave Newcastle so soon.
