Newcastle United stepping low in race to sign £70m England star as Tottenham now in pole position

Tottenham is thought to be the frontrunner for Leicester City’s James Maddison, but they will face competition from Newcastle and Manchester City.

Spurs are in need of midfielders for next season because Rodrigo Bentancur will be out until November, and Maddison is the creative threat Antonio Conte requires in his squad.

According to Football Insider, Maddison is expected to leave Leicester this summer and wants to be a key player at any potential new club in order to keep his place in the England National Team.

As his contract expires in 2024, the 26-year-old will cost any interested party around £60m-£70m, and now would be the ideal time for Leicester to cash in on the midfielder.

Maddison is having a fantastic season for Leicester, which has piqued the interest of a number of clubs. In addition to Tottenham, Manchester City and Newcastle are interested in the England international.

The Champions League may play a significant role in his decision this summer, with fourth-place Tottenham only one point ahead of Newcastle at the moment.
