Newcastle Utd beat Tottenham in a hot battle to sign Leicester City midfield general

Newcastle United will “come out of nowhere,” according to Gabby Agbonlahor, to sign James Maddison. Last summer, ChronicleLive reported that the Toon had two bids for the Leicester City midfielder rejected.

The second offer, thought to be around £45 million, was dismissed by Foxes manager Brendan Rodgers, who joked that Newcastle couldn’t afford “three-quarters” of Maddison’s left leg. Since then, the England international has been a standout in the Premier League.

Despite Leicester being one point above the drop zone, his nine goals and six assists in 20 games have only enhanced his reputation. With one year remaining on his contract in June, the King Power hierarchy may be forced to sell their asset at a loss.

Tottenham Hotspur, Tottenham’s Champions League rivals, have also been linked with the 26-year-old. The top-four race could be crucial in determining where Maddison ends up at the end of the season if he leaves.

In an interview with talkSPORT, former Aston Villa striker Agbonlahor predicted that Newcastle would beat Spurs to his signature regardless. “If I’m Spurs, I’m getting a Maddison deal done behind the scenes right now,” he said.

“In the summer, Newcastle will appear out of nowhere and say, ‘OK, then, we’re not wasting any time.'” Maddison will end up at Newcastle. The Spurs require a (number) ten.”
