Newcastle United have been linked with a summer transfer for Neymar, and it appears that the Paris Saint-Germain superstar may be on the way.
Last week, it was reported that Newcastle’s owners are interested in acquiring Neymar, with 90min reporting that PIF wants to bring the 31-year-old to St James’ Park as a statement signing.
Talk of the Brazilian relocating to Tyneside may seem far-fetched, but it was always going to happen when rumors began to emerge that he would be leaving Paris.
And a new ESPN story provides an update on Neymar’s situation after rumours that Newcastle could try to sign him.
According to ESPN, Neymar wishes to quit PSG because he believes he is no longer wanted there and that it is best for him to move on before the start of the next season. This comes after fans protested at his home, demanding that he leave the club.
According to the source, PSG is willing to let the superstar forward depart on loan, and are willing to accommodate a temporary exit if it contains a purchase option the following year.
According to ESPN, Neymar would prefer a move to the Premier League, which Newcastle currently occupy.
Newcastle has spent much too much money.
A move to Newcastle makes sense in a fantasy universe. He is one of the most famous players in the world and would be the marquee signing that PIF is searching for. We might also be in the Champions League, making a relocation to the North East much more tempting.
There’s also the Brazilian component to consider. Neymar has played with Bruno Guimaraes, and Joelinton is a big fan.Last year, he called Neymar a ‘idol’ and invited him to sign with the Magpies.
But it’s just not going to happen. This month, Eddie Howe admitted that players like Neymar would be too expensive for the club.
That is precisely the source of the problem. Aside from a transfer price, the winger’s wage demands would be out of this world. According to ESPN, he earns about £35 million per year in salaries in Paris, which corresponds to around £670,000 per week. That is six times what Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier receives.
That number alone demonstrates why he will not be joining Newcastle, even if a loan agreement is available.
