Newcastle Utd win the battle as Leicester City midfield wizard finally accept to join St James’ Park

According to Football Insider, Newcastle are the frontrunners to sign James Maddison this summer. Two attempts to sign the Leicester City midfielder last year were unsuccessful.

The Foxes, on the other hand, are in the relegation zone, while Newcastle are near the top of the table. In 20 league appearances, the England international has been a rare bright spot in an otherwise disappointing season for Leicester, scoring nine goals and creating six more.

With his contract expiring in just over a year, it appears Maddison will leave the King Power Stadium. According to the report, Newcastle United are in “pole position” to sign the 26-year-old, with Tottenham Hotspur also showing interest.

Eddie Howe will almost certainly be looking for a midfielder after the departure of Jonjo Shelvey in January. Newcastle currently has four players competing for three engine room positions.

According to Dean Jones, Howe would “love” to sign Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse. The Saints are currently bottom of the table, but in the most tense relegation battle in years, just one win could lift them above the relegation zone.

Ward-Prowse would almost certainly be a transfer target if Southampton were to fail. Newcastle have previously been linked with the set-piece specialist, who is one free-kick goal shy of David Beckham’s all-time Premier League record.

“Yeah, Howe would love a player like Ward-Prowse,” Jones told GiveMeSport. He’s a sure foot, he can weigh in at crucial moments to decide games, and he’s been extremely professional throughout his career. But he’s been so loyal to Southampton.”
