This summer, Newchase United have been linked with signing Ruben Neves, who has made an intriguing comment about his future with Wolves.
On Sunday, Neves was at St James’ Park, but he was unable to inspire the Wolves to victory over Newcastle. Alexander Isak and Miguel Almiron scored for Eddie Howe’s team, who won 2-1.
The Magpies’ midfield put in an outstanding performance.
Joe Willock was one of Newcastle’s standout performers, while Sean Longstaff and Bruno Guimaraes also delivered.
Wolves, on the other hand, had a difficult afternoon. Neves had chances to make an impact on the game with one of his trademark long-range strikes, but he couldn’t get past Nick Pope.
It was an opportunity for the Portuguese midfielder to demonstrate his abilities to Newcastle. He was linked with a move to SJP in January, and the Daily Mail has since claimed that he will be a summer target.
While he may have failed his audition, the Toon recruitment team will undoubtedly be interested in what Neves has said about his future with the Wolves.
The 26-year-old discussed his future with ELEVEN (as reported by Record) and appears to have opened the door for a move away from Molineux.
“I’m very happy here [at Wolves],” he stated.
“But obviously, in terms of my career, I’d like to play in the Champions League again.
“It’s one of my goals to try to win as many titles as possible before I finish my career. That’s all there is to it. The goal of any player is to be able to compete at the highest level in the world’s biggest competitions.”
Neves’ chances of playing in the Champions League for Wolves are slim, but he could do so for Newcastle.
The Magpies are in contention to qualify for next season’s competition, and their chances were boosted by their 2-1 victory over Wolves on Sunday.
If Howe’s side can go on a run similar to the one they enjoyed earlier in the season then they have a great chance of finishing in the top four. That would qualify Newcastle for the Champions League, which would be an incredible achievement.
It would also make St James’ Park a much more appealing destination for players wishing to compete in Europe’s premier tournament.
Neves has stated his desire to do so, and he may be on the move soon. His contract with the Wolves expires in 2024, so he could be sold this summer.
He’s on Newcastle’s radar, and while he struggled at St James’ Park on Sunday, he could see the North East as the ideal place to realize his European dreams.
