The legendary goalkeeper thinks that the Toon Army faithful are seeing the ‘real Anthony Gordon’ this season after his winter transfer from Everton, as he told Premier League
When the 22-year-old first joined Newcastle United, he struggled to settle in, but with a pre-season under his belt, the all-action winger is starting to look like a different animal.
Having that pre-season under your belt helps, as well as coming off a strong summer where Anthony Gordon helped the England U21s win the European Championships.
During the early stages of the new campaign, he has two goals and two assists from his opening seven Premier League matches, including making his Champions League debut.
The £60k-a-week star (Spotrac) deserves his flowers for the start he has made because there is surely more to come.
“I have got to mention Anthony Gordon as well,” said Given. “I think he has had a brilliant start to the season.
“There were some question marks after coming from Everton last season. But now I think Newcastle fans are seeing the real Anthony Gordon.
“He does look a bit like a £40 million bargain. It’s a strange statement. But in the grand scheme of some of the fees you can pay. I think he is going to be a brilliant player for them.”
Another international break is around the corner! Gareth Southgate is set to name his England squad next Thursday and there is every chance that Gordon might be picked.
On form, you would pick him. On form, you would pick him ahead of the likes of Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish.
But then again, he probably won’t get a call because Southgate is probably planning to recall Stewart Downing instead because of what he did at Middlesbrough many moons ago.
