Baker Mayfield Was Trending After Michigan-Ohio State Brawl

The Michigan Wolverines-Ohio State Buckeyes brawl surprised all of college football, so much so that fans, players and experts alike can’t stop talking about the wild ending of the rivalry game.

For those who missed it, Michigan got into a heated physical fight with Ohio State. It happened after Wolverines players tried to plant their flag in the middle of Ohio State’s field following their 13-10 upset of the home team.

Of course, Ryan Day’s men took issue with the attempted disrespect, leading to the altercation that required police involvement.

Former Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer and ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit both condemned the violent turn of events. Meyer emphasized that there’s “no room” for such actions in the sport, while Herbstreit claimed it’s a “black eye for CFB.”

As the sports world continued to discuss the incident, though, it also led to a ripple effect involving Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Mayfield had no role in the Michigan-Ohio State fight, but it caused fans to bring up his past actions when he was still part of the Oklahoma Sooners.

To recall, back in 2017, Mayfield planted Oklahoma’s flag on Ohio State’s logo at midfield following a 31-16 victory. It was similar to what Michigan attempted to do on Saturday, so Mayfield’s moment became a hot topic of discussion as well.

“How times have changed,” On3 reporter Hayes Fawcett wrote along with a clip of Mayfield’s moment.

“If Baker Mayfield did this today it would’ve started World War III,” Barstool Sports joked.

“This is likely the last weekend of flag planting we’ll ever see in college football before the NCAA starts handing out fines. Never forget who was the trailblazer of it all. Baker Mayfield walked so we could fight,” NESN reporter George Balekji added.

“Hate to see the postgame punch-throwing between Michigan and Ohio State — but I don’t blame the Buckeyes’ angry reaction to Michigan trying to plant its flag the way Baker Mayfield did at midfield. Buckeyes finally snatched the flag and stomped on it. I’m fine with that,” veteran sports host Skip Bayless wrote.

Another commenter added, “Baker Mayfield has done irreparable damage to CFB rivalry games lol.”

“Baker Mayfield watching all of these flag plants around college football today,” Deadspin chimed in along with an Oppenheimer meme.

Baker Mayfield will probably be surprised to see his name trending due to the Michigan-Ohio State fight. Unfortunately for him, whenever similar incidents happen in the future, his name will likely come up again.

As for Michigan and Ohio State, the Big Ten conference has yet to address the incident and what kind of punishment will be handed down to both teams.
