Everyone’s Saying the Same Thing About Oregon and Ohio State After Latest College Football Playoff Rankings

The latest College Football Playoff rankings came out on Tuesday night, giving us an updated look at the postseason picture after the Alabama Crimson Tide, Ole Miss Rebels, Indiana Hoosiers and BYU Cougars lost in Week 13.

One of the biggest takeaways is where those teams are in the rankings. Another is the incredibly tough draw the No. 1 Oregon Ducks would receive if the current rankings hold.

Currently, Dan Lanning and the Ducks would get a first-round bye should they win the Big Ten championship game, but they would face either the eighth-seeded Georgia Bulldogs or the ninth-seeded Tennessee Volunteers in the quarterfinals.

Neither of those are opponents you can overlook, and each would present a major challenge compared to what the Ohio State Buckeyes would see with the No. 5 seed.

Ohio State would host a home game in Round 1 against the Arizona State Sun Devils, followed by a game against the Boise State Broncos. If they win both of those, they would face the winner of Oregon vs. Georgia/Tennessee for a spot in the national championship game.

The disparity between these two paths was a hot topic on social media on Tuesday night.

Of course, it’s unlikely the current seeding plays out exactly as projected on Tuesday, since several of the teams will playing each other in conference championship games over the next couple of weeks.

However, it highlights the fact there may be a real advantage to getting the five-seed if you’re Oregon or Ohio State, rather than winning the Big Ten championship and getting the one-seed with a bye week.

While no coach or player would agree with you, it will certainly be a topic for debate over the next couple of weeks until the final playoff rankings are revealed.
