Fans celebrates as £18m Nottingham Forest player back in training set to play vs Sheffield United

Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo has today delivered an update on the fitness of Taiwo Awoniyi.

The Nigerian striker hasn’t played since a 1-0 defeat to Brighton at the beginning of March and he’s missed the last seven matches.

Forest striker Awoniyi has also had groin surgery this season and it’s been a highly frustrating season for the striker.

Still, the talisman has scored six goals in 20 appearances and he remains a very important player at the City Ground.

Now, with just three games remaining, Forest head coach Espirito Santo has delivered an update on the well-being of the uncompromising striker.

Well, this could be huge news ahead of Saturday’s massive Premier League clash away at Sheffield United for Forest.

The Reds are facing a team who are yet to win this year and have almost conceded 100 goals in the top flight.

However, the Reds will have to take the Blades seriously given that the pressure is off and they’re now relegated.

It would appear as though a decision will be made on Awoniyi by the Forest head coach in the coming days and he could be in the squad.

BBC Radio Nottingham have posted on X that Awoniyi has now joined in training with the rest of his teammates at Forest.

It’s claimed that he and Neco Williams will both be assessed ahead of the short trip along the M1 to South Yorkshire to play the Blades.

Awoniyi brings different qualities to Chris Wood

The 26-year-old signed for Forest from Union Berlin for a fee of around £18 million.

He’s proved a really decent piece of business for Forest and last season he scored 11 goals to help Forest remain in the Premier League.

Although Chris Wood has done magnificently well, he doesn’t quite bring the same attributes to the table that Awoniyi does.

The Nigerian is more of a brute with his hold-up play and he’s a nightmare for defenders with his unorthodox style of play.

It would be a huge call if Awoniyi is fit to play some part on Saturday and hopefully, Forest can get him back on the pitch very soon.
