Nottingham Forest allowed Will Swan to join Mansfield Town on a permanent basis in the summer. Last night, he got himself off the mark for 2023/24 as the Stags reached the last 16 of the Carabao Cup.
Nigel Clough had Swan on loan from Forest last season. Despite picking up an injury that ruled him out of the business end of the campaign, he still managed to score 10 goals.
That was enough to convince Clough that Swan had something about him and could do a job for Mansfield. Now, he’s up and running for the new season after his goal last night.
Swan off the mark for Mansfield
This will definitely be a weight off the shoulders of the striker. He’s only started three games in League Two this season and he will be craving more starts.
Swan scored his first goal of the new campaign from the penalty spot in the fourth minute. After being fouled in the box, he dusted himself down and dispatched his spot-kick.
The Stags will now hope to draw one of the big boys in the next round of the League Cup. Nigel Clough has been all the way to the semi-final of this competition before and he’ll be eyeing glory again.
Forest allowed Swan to leave and Clough could be perfect for him
Some fans might have been a little sad to see Swan leave Forest. Ultimately, staying in the Premier League meant that his chances at the City Ground would have been non-existent.
At 22-years-old, the player desperately needs regular football. Before last season that wasn’t something he’d really experienced throughout his career and he did well in 2022/23.
Mansfield are unbeaten in all competitions so far this season. They are desperately trying to get themselves into League One and Swan will hope to play a big part.
Leaving Forest with a year left on his contract can’t have been easy for Swan. He’s made the right decision though and under the influence of Clough, he’ll hope to score more goals.
