Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest are preparing to compete for Everton defender Mason Holgate.
With Sean Dyche wanting to revamp his squad, Holgate is poised to leave the Toffees this summer.
According to the Sun, both United and Forest are interested in Holgate, who has more than 120 Premier League games for Everton.
According to Football Insider, Everton has agreed to let Holgate go on loan. And, with United eyeing that market, the 26-year-old appears to be a good fit.
Holgate joined Everton from West Brom, but he began his career with Barnsley in South Yorkshire. It remains to be seen whether a return to these parts appeals to the defender.
The addition of a player like Holgate would be a big coup for United.
With budgets somewhat tight, Paul Heckingbottom understands that bringing in any players with Premier League experience would be a great plus.
Of course, Forest’s involvement is problematic. Since their promotion, the Reds have spent lavishly and would most certainly outspend United in terms of wages.
However, the fact that the agreement is a loan gives the Blades some hope.
Sheff U News Opinion: Premier League experience is important.
Mason Holgate is likely to be a player who divides Blades fans. On the one hand, he is only 26 years old, yet he has over 100 Premier League appearances under his belt and much-needed experience.Alan Shearer lauded him a few seasons ago, calling him “no-nonsense” and “really impressive.”
However, Holgate’s stock has plummeted since then, and this is where some United fans may have doubts.
However, in terms of the players we can realistically sign this summer, Holgate has to be mentioned.
He can play throughout the backline and has something to prove. A loan deal may work here, and with Egan and Ahmedhodzic alongside him, the Blades would have a strong back three.
