Richie Laryea is officially back at Nottingham Forest, but Toronto FC president Bill Manning wants him back. The 28-year-old is currently in limbo after his loan agreement ended.
In January 2022, the defender joined with the Reds from the MLS franchise. The Reds were looking for a backup to Djed Spence as they sought promotion to the Premier League.
Given Laryea’s form for Forest during that time, first-team football was difficult to come by.
on Trentside. He only started one game, a dead rubber against Hull City, and appeared in five others.
Laryea’s worst-case scenario was undoubtedly Forest’s promotion to the Premier League. He hadn’t yet established himself in England, and when Spence went to Tottenham, Forest signed Neco Williams and Serge Aurier.
Manning stated that he will be addressing things with Forest, implying that Laryea is wanted back in Toronto. “We’re working on it,” he told reporter Luke Wileman. Laryea called me last night, and we’re still talking. things’s not entirely up to us right now because he’s with another club, but we’re trying to work things out.”
Laryea spent the first part of the season on loan with Toronto. In 19 appearances for the club during the 2023 season, he scored twice and assisted five times.
Laryea is technically back with the Forest, but Toronto wants him back.
This is an agreement that benefits all parties. Laryea is unlikely to get an opportunity at Forest, and at the age of 28, he will want to play regular games someplace.
Last summer, English clubs expressed interest in Laryea. His style of play implies he has the potential to make an impact in the Championship, but it remains to be seen if that opportunity arises.
The 39-cap player will try to maintain his spot on the Canada team. To do so, he needs to play regularly, which he knows he will do in Toronto.
Laryea’s time at Forest appears to be coming to an end. He will not start ahead of Williams or Aurier next season, and a permanent return to Toronto FC is the most likely scenario for the player.
