However, because Rovers failed to complete the transfer before the deadline, the EFL refused to sanction the move, and Blackburn challenged the decision, prolonging the dispute for weeks after the window closed.
It was eventually determined that Blackburn would not be able to retain O’Brien for the duration of the season, leaving Blackburn without a much-needed option in the middle of the park.
Because the midfielder was not featured in Steve Cooper’s plans for the second half of the 2022/23 season, he faced the choice of moving on loan to a US team or sitting out the rest of the season.
He eventually signed for Wayne Rooney’s DC United in mid-March for a loan stay that was slated to finish in July.
With one goal and one assist in 10 games for the American club since his arrival, he hasn’t exactly been a great asset in front of goal, but he may simply be grateful for the chance to play.
He was an important player for Huddersfield throughout the 2021/22 season, and he might be the guy to lead Blackburn into the play-offs next season.
