Nottingham Forest are reportedly interested in signing Jhegson Mendez from Sao Paulo.
Forest are “very interested” in Mendez, according to South American football journalist Joaquin Saavedra, who claims “there are talks” between the two teams and the player’s representatives.
The 26-year-old Ecuadorian will compete in the World Cup in 2022. After his contract with MLS club Los Angeles expired, he joined Sao Paulo.
In Brazil, he slid down the pecking order under new manager Dorival Junior and is now competing for a spot behind Luan, Pablo Maia, and Gabriel Neves.
Forest are thought to be interested in signing the midfielder to bolster Steve Cooper’s team this summer. Mendez is a potential player who has been characterized as “one of the best” in the Ecuador national team.
“Hopefully, one of the best players from Ecuador in the World Cup can go to Europe,” Saavedra added.
Junior justified Mendez’s lack of playing time, saying, “There are a few players I haven’t had the opportunity to observe, and Mendez is one of them.” He’s a player with exceptional technical ability. I only asked for a few information so that we could rely on him in critical situations. He’s a great player; I simply needed one or two details.”
