Steve Cooper express deep happiness as Nottingham Forest best defender back in training

Scott McKenna has returned to Nottingham Forest training after missing the previous seven games, according to head coach Steve Cooper.

The 26-year-old limped out of the 2-0 loss to Fulham in February and has been out for about six weeks.

The uncompromising Scotland defender is now stepping up his recovery, with Cooper questioning him earlier today.

McKenna was almost always on the field for the Reds last season. He appeared in all but one of Forest’s 46 Championship games and was named the club’s Player of the Year.

The Reds signed the centre-back in 2020. He cost the club a fee that could eventually amount to around £6.5 million, and he’s proven to be a very wise acquisition.

He’s now accelerating his recovery, with Cooper providing some encouraging news about McKenna this morning.

“Scott McKenna is back in training, which is a real positive for us,” he said on the club’s official website.

McKenna is not only a good player, but also a good influence on his teammates. When he was at Aberdeen, Joe Lewis described him as a “complete professional,” and bringing him back would be huge.

Felipe and Moussa Niakhate are the current holders of the centre-back shirts, with Joe Worrall on the bench.

Cooper has confirmed McKenna’s return to training.

Having McKenna back in a Forest shirt will be a huge boost. He was just beginning to show his worth, and he’s a very useful player.

The Scotland international is unlikely to be recalled immediately. Felipe and Niakhate are performing admirably and will be the first-choice pairing.

Niakhate has only recently returned from injury, so having another left-sided center-back on the team would be ideal.

McKenna will be raring to go when he returns to the squad, eager to pick up where he left off before his injury.
