A former Kaizer Chiefs player was on hand to inflict defeat on Orlando Pirates in a shock result against Magesi in the Carling Knockout.

Magesi stun Orlando Pirates with an ex-Kaizer Chiefs star on the score sheet

Jose Riveiro’s cup specialists are out of the Carling Knockout after a surprise 2-3 defeat to PSL newcomers Magesi. The Sea Robbers have won three consecutive MTN8 crowns and consecutive Nedbank Cups but the Carling Knockout remains a problem tournament. Kabelo Dlamini scored an 86th-minute consolation and a late Magesi own goal made things interesting in stoppage time but the underdogs held on for a huge win. Patrick Maswanganyi had the ball in the net in the 95th minute but his goal was correctly chalked off for offside. Former Amakhosi star Edmore Chirambadare scored Magesi’s second. The Zimbabwean winger was a Glamour Boy between 2016 and 2018, making 27 appearances. This will have felt sweet for the 32-year-old.

Pirates starting XI vs Magesi: Chaine; Van Rooyen, Sesane, Sibisi, Hotto; Rasebotja, Dlamini; Mofokeng, Kimvuidi, Saleng; Mabasa.

Subs: Buthelezi, Maela, Monyane, Ndlondlo, Maswanganyi, Nkota, Moleleki, Gilberto, Makgopa.

Kaizer Chiefs sail through

Nasreddine Nabi’s charges are safely through to the Carling Knockout quarter-finals. They thumped SuperSport 4-0 with goals from Yusuf Maart, Gaston Sirino, Ranga Chivaviro and Ashley Du Preez. Chiefs could face Sundowns next in the tournament as they’re not seeded.

Next six tests for Riveiro and Pirates

Pirates must dust themselves down and get back to basics in the Betway Premiership. They’ve also got some enticing Caf Champions League clashes on the horizon so there’s an immediate opportunity to bounce back from the Magesi result.

Rumours: Pirates to cash in on R25 million man

Mabasa’s rival for a place in the Bucs starting XI, Evidence Makgopa, was preferred in the recent MTN8 final win but Mabasa was picked in the shock Carling Knockout defeat to Magesi. Makgopa is four years Mabasa’s junior, making his potential future resale value far higher but now both strikers are in the wilderness for Bafana Bafana. Could they be selling one of them?
