According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Boston Celtics have indicated interest in re-signing veteran forward Blake Griffin, but whether that desire is reciprocated remains to be seen.
Griffin made his debut with the Celtics in 2022-23 after signing with the team just a few weeks before the season began. However, he only averaged 13.9 minutes per game for 4.1 points and 3.8 rebounds this season. During the playoffs, he played only six minutes.
Griffin, a former first-round pick and six-time All-Star, has essentially lost his ability to impact an NBA game since joining the Detroit Pistons over five years ago following a lengthy career with the Los Angeles Clippers. However, output last year was the lowest it has ever been, both in terms of minutes and productivity.
Clearly, the days of the 34-year-old soaring over opponents for rim-shattering dunks are over, but he would no doubt love to be playing more than 13 minutes per game and averaging more than four points per game. Furthermore, with the Celtics’ acquisition of Kristaps Porzingis, Griffin’s chances of being given a larger role in the upcoming season compared to the previous one are slim, so it’s easy to see why he wouldn’t rush back to the team.
