Despite a busy offseason, the Boston Celtics still have two available roster places. With the C’s not being as financially flexible as they were before to signing star Jaylen Brown to a huge agreement, they may have to seek for a steal before the summer is up.

Blake Griffin, a six-time All-Star, is a great contender to replace one of Boston’s vacancies, as the 34-year-old could return on a cheap contract. Griffin hasn’t ruled out a return to Boston, according to Celtics CLNS writer Bobby Manning.

“I’ve heard that despite the distance from family and his home on the west coast, the door remains open for his return,” Manning wrote.

Although Griffin is past his prime, he can provide experienced leadership in the locker room and fill in for former Celtics point guard Marcus Smart. Griffin can provide some solid defense and rebounding off the bench. He averaged 4.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 13.9 minutes a game last season.

Those numbers aren’t fantastic, but Griffin is a seasoned player who can fill in when Boston is down a man. While it’s difficult to see him ever becoming the player he once was, he should be able to fill in on the bench at a modest cost.

He’s also one of the top charge-takers in the NBA. The C’s must make up for the tenacity and hustle they lost after parting company with Smart and forward Grant Williams. Griffin would not be a major piece on the roster, but he would surely add toughness.
