Arthur Smith teams up with a familiar face to support Russell Wilson’s attack for the Steelers.
The Pittsburgh Steelers will have a completely new appearance in 2024. Kenny Pickett is no longer the quarterback and Matt Canada is no longer the offensive coordinator.
Russell Wilson and Arthur Smith will take their posts in their stead. To fit their new identity, the team will be adding new faces, but the majority of the skill positions will stay the same.
According to Jeremy Fowler, the Steelers will offer MyCole Pruitt, a former tight end for the Atlanta Falcons, a new contract. Considering the players Pittsburgh currently has, it’s undoubtedly an intriguing signing. This provides the team’s tight end with additional depth, at the absolute least. It can’t be harmful, can it?
“Stiff end” According to a source, MyCole Pruitt and the #Steelers have agreed to terms. rejoined Arthur Smith from their time spent in Atlanta and Tennessee.
Pruitt caught nine passes for 110 yards and one touchdown in 2023. Last season, he participated in 36% of the Falcons’ snap counts.
Any Steelers fan would undoubtedly cite the offense as the team’s main issue from the previous campaign. While Pickett was not without faults, Matt Canada was largely to blame. That was the case for a good reason: with Canada in charge, the Pittsburgh offense has appeared lifeless for years. Fans were relieved to see him go this offseason.
But the replacement from Canada is probably the league’s second-most despised offensive mind. What Canada was to Steelers fans, Arthur Smith was to Falcons supporters. Although Pittsburgh supporters bemoaned the lack of diversity in their OC’s plays, Smith’s issue was probably his overly inventive sets. His refusal to use Kyle Pitts and Bijan Robinson infuriated fans (and fantasy football players) no end.
Atlanta’s quarterback play is one advantage that Smith has. Desmond Ridder’s incapacity to start in the NFL was virtually universally acknowledged by Falcons supporters. There was nothing redeeming about Ridder’s play, even with the crappy playcalling. The Steelers are expecting Justin Fields or Russell Wilson to be a far superior quarterback than Ridder.
This season, it will be interesting to see how the Steelers manage their quarterback room. They made a radical change at the position, replacing Justin Fields and Russell Wilson with Mason Rudolph, Mitch Trubisky, and Pickett. This is, theoretically, the ideal situation for Mike Tomlin and the group. This season, Wilson fills in for Fields at quarterback as he takes a year off to learn under the all-time great.
But Wilson’s play isn’t the same as it used to be. The quarterback for the Steelers was mediocre the previous season, but his previous playstyle hasn’t been successful this time around. Last year was superior to his first year in Denver for him. But if we’re being really honest, that doesn’t say much.
When Wilson starts to struggle or deals with an injury, the Steelers will need to make an appropriate decision about when to bring in Fields. It will not be simple, that much is certain. Regardless of the players, Pittsburgh has consistently been a contender for the championship. A seasoned quarterback is preferred over a young talent. But who knows what will transpire this season?
