San Francisco 49ers has be reported by….

The search for a defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers has been anything but quiet. That ended Monday, when NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco reported that the 49ers had officially completed two interviews.

One was with former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley, and the other is 49ers defensive end Nick Sorensen. The 49ers are expected to wrap up their interviews by the end of this week. Next up for interviews is defensive backs coach Daniel Bullocks, and it’s also possible the 49ers will consider some outside coaches.

It’s been 12 days since Steve Wilks was fired from the defensive coordinator search. Keeping information close to the chest is nothing new for the 49ers. But it takes so long to find their new coordinator. While it may seem shocking or strange, it makes perfect sense for the 49ers to last this long. As I wrote before, the 49ers are in no rush.

“Speed makes waste,” as the cliché goes. For the 49ers, they need to hire their defensive coordinator right. Kyle Shanahan wants to avoid a Steve Wilks-like situation again. He wants to really trust his coordinator.

Shanahan doesn’t want to be tied down like Wilks. And since the 49ers are the only team with an open defensive coordinator, they don’t have to worry about picking prospects.

They must think carefully and take their time. The 49ers are taking a great approach to this. Copyright ABG-SI LLC. SPORTS ILLUSTRATED is a registered trademark of ABG-SI LLC. All rights reserved..
