All the Bomb Squad Fuss: ‘If Anybody Else Had Done It…’ Says Bok No. 8 Jasper Wiese

Springbok No. 8, Jasper Wiese, has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding South Africa’s famed “Bomb Squad,” the nickname for their powerful bench players who consistently change the tide of matches with their explosive impact. Wiese, who has been an integral part of the squad, expressed his thoughts on the attention and scrutiny the Bomb Squad receives, especially in comparison to how other teams and players are treated in similar situations.

While South Africa’s bombastic forwards are often seen as game-changers, Wiese believes that if the roles were reversed and any other team employed a similar tactical approach, it would not be subject to the same level of discussion. “If anybody else had done it, it wouldn’t be an issue,” Wiese said, defending the Springbok strategy. “But because it’s us, there’s always a bit of fuss around it.”

The Bomb Squad—comprising some of the most physically imposing players in world rugby—has been a hallmark of the Springboks’ strategy under head coach Rassie Erasmus and his successor Jacques Nienaber. This tactical shift focuses on bringing on a group of high-impact forwards in the second half to disrupt the opposition’s rhythm and generate momentum. The effect is often immediate, as these players bring unmatched intensity and physicality to the game.

However, despite its success, the concept has drawn criticism from some corners of the rugby world, with detractors questioning the fairness of deploying a group of fresh, world-class players late in the game. But Wiese, a key member of the Bomb Squad, believes that this is simply part of the Springboks’ winning formula and does not reflect any unfair advantage.

“Every team has its own strategy,” Wiese explained. “What works for us may not work for others, but that’s the beauty of rugby. If another team did the same thing, no one would blink an eye. But when we do it, people talk about it a lot more.”

The approach has undoubtedly contributed to the Springboks’ recent successes, including their victory in the 2023 Rugby World Cup, where the Bomb Squad played a pivotal role in their knockout stage performances. Wiese, known for his dynamic ball-carrying and physical presence, echoed the sentiment that rugby is a team game, and no strategy should be scrutinized for its effectiveness.

“We’re not here to play nice,” said Wiese with a grin. “We want to win, and we’ll do whatever it takes. That’s the bottom line.”

As South Africa heads into another cycle of international competition, the discussion surrounding the Bomb Squad is unlikely to die down. Still, for Wiese and his teammates, their focus remains on executing their game plan, regardless of the noise around them.
