Yahoo Sports’ Jason Fitz looks at the one big thing for Tennessee’s offseason – which will include retooling after the departure of Mike Vrabel, as well as (most likely) Derrick Henry and Ryan Tannehill.
JASON FITZ: With the Super Bowl in the rearview mirror, it’s time to take a look at one big thing facing the Tennessee Titans this offseason. And that thing is a rebuild. We’re talking about a rebuild not just on the field, but a rebuild in the way you’re perceived and a rebuild in identity. This is an absolute reset for the organization.
Mike Vrabel has been the face of the Tennessee Titans for many years, beloved by many people in NFL circles. No longer the head coach, as Brian Callahan comes in to take that job.
But it’s not just about him. Derrick Henry presumably will not be a Tennessee Titan this year, which is such a change for a superstar player that’s still beloved in the Nashville community, a community that has embraced great Titans in the past. Think of Eddie George. Think of Steve McNair. Think of Frank Wycheck. You can put Derrick Henry in those sorts of conversations and realize how much he means, not just to the team but also to the city.
With him no longer there, you have to ask, who’s going to become the face of this organization? An organization that needs so many things.
The good news for the Titans is that some of their needs mirror some of the strengths in this year’s draft. Their offensive line last year was absolutely abysmal. They can address that in the draft. Wide receiver position has been something that has really been elusive to them for many years. They can address that in the draft.
They also have enough money to do what they want to do in free agency in a year where I would expect that Ryan Tannehill is gone, Derrick Henry is gone, and we know that Mike Vrabel is gone. When you look across the board, what we are going to see is a Titans team that looks drastically different.
Will that have great results? Only time will tell. But this year, right away in this offseason, we’ll find out who these Tennessee Titans want to be.
Thanks for sharing. I read many of your blog posts, cool, your blog is very good.
