£20m Tottenham target finally sent response as Daniel Levy prepare to push for more

Harry Winks has confirmed his departure from Sampdoria with Tottenham Hotspur officially missing out on the chance to earn £20 million via the sale of a Premier League misfit.

Though we did not need a lengthy Instagram post to tell us that Harry Winks would not be staying at Samp.

Amid major problems off the field and some rather sizeable ones on it too, the Blucerchiati were relegated from Serie A for the first time in over a decade at the start of May. If Winks felt that a move to Italy would serve to jump-start his stalling career – having fallen out of favour at Tottenham Hotspur – then it’s fair to say his best laid plans quickly went awry in the picturesque surrounds of Liguria.

The England international missed the whole first half of the season due to an ankle injury. And, when he finally returned to full fitness, Sampdoria were already teetering on the brink.

“I would like to say a big thank you to everyone at Sampdoria for this season,” Winks writes. “It was a very challenging season both on and off the pitch.

“But it was an honour to play for such an amazing football club with so much history and incredible fans. I have no doubt the club will return to where it belongs.

“And, with new investment, (Sampdoria) can continue to be the amazing club the fans deserve.”

According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham farmed Winks out to Sampdoria on a season-long deal, complete with a £20 million option-to-buy clause in his contract. Even if Samp had avoided the drop, such a fee would have been well beyond the means of a club spent a grand total of £5 million on new signings during the summer of 2022.

Winks, then, returns to Tottenham ahead of what is likely to be a summer of real change in North London.

Spurs confirmed the appointment of Ange Postecoglou as their new manager on Tuesday morning. Could this represent something of a fresh-start for the homegrown 27-year-old? Winks’ composure in possession is likely to appeal to a coach who prides himself upon dominating the ball.
