Tottenham have made a mixed start to the new Premier League season.
You can’t deny, Ange Postecoglou‘s side are pretty entertaining to watch and fans have got attacking football back at their club.
When Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho were in the Tottenham dugouts, whilst they were serial winners, they got lambasted for their style of play.
That’s why Daniel Levy turned to Postecoglou after he won the Treble with Celtic and he lit up the place, even though Harry Kane left Tottenham as soon as he entered the building.
But Tottenham’s defeat to Newcastle over the weekend has opened the door for the manager and his players to get verbally battered.
The Europa League side had just over 65% possession at St James’ Park, they had 20 shots at goal, six of which were on target, but they still lost the match.
From a style of play perspective, it was all-action, the fullbacks were playing as tens, and they were getting numbers forward and having wave and wave of attack.
But, just like at Leicester City on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season – and even the previous campaign – all that dominance resulted in zero points.
That’s why Robbie Savage was suggesting that ‘Ange ball’ has been ‘deflated’ as he referenced their recent loss to a team that didn’t play well.
But Chris Sutton was having none of it and he defended the Spurs boss by telling Savage ‘you are better than that’ and they have been ‘unfortunate’, as he told 606.
Tottenham’s style of play under Ange Postecoglou
“Spurs fans, Chris (Sutton), Ange ball?! Is it getting deflated,” asked Savage. “They have just lost to Newcastle and they (Newcastle) didn’t play well. They drew at Leicester.
Sutton responded: “Oh, come on. You are better than that. They have been unfortunate. It will come. Patience. You know in management, you are a manager now, you need to be patient. It’s all about performance. Result and performance. The performances are there. The results will come.”
Dominic Solanke’s injury
After the international break, it’s the small matter of Tottenham facing their north London rivals Arsenal – they too dropped points last week
Postecoglou will be hoping Solanke returns after he got injured on debut because he might just provide the finishing touch needed for the team.
With Tottenham’s club-record transfer down the middle and Son Heung-min on the left, you sense those two are going to provide the large chunk of goals the team will score.
But you do want, the likes of James Maddison, Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison, to name a few, to up their games, by at least, trying to hit double-figure goals.
