Tottenham Hotspur haven’t had the best of starts to the season.
Spurs have picked up just four points from their first three games, and many of the issues that were present under Ange Postecoglou towards the end of last season are still prevalent.
Of course, as ever, football fans are reactionary, and some are now beginning to question Postecoglou.
Speaking on BBC 606, Chris Sutton has had a disagreement with a Spurs fan about Postecoglou.
The caller stated that he doesn’t believe Ange Postecoglou has the pedigree to take Spurs to the top.
Sutton wholly disagreed, stating that Postecoglou has tasted success in three countries, so he does have the pedigree to do the business in England too.
Chris Sutton’s Ange Postecoglou disagreement
The pundit defended the Tottenham manager.
“It’s a general gripe, saying it’s not going to work out. He might win us a cup, but he has no pedigree in that department to say that he’s going to do it,” A caller said.
“That is ridiculous to say he has no pedigree. He’s been coaching for 25 years. He’s had success in Japan, Australia and Scotland. That is slightly arrogant. He progressed the team last season, he lost Harry Kane, he finished fifth, that is progress,” Sutton said.
Ange Postecoglou’s pedigree is there
There are two interesting ways at looking at this argument.
You can understand Sutton’s perspective. After all, Postecoglou has been successful pretty much anywhere he’s been.
However, the point the caller makes is that Postecoglou hasn’t done it in a top league, which is also valid.
Numerous managers have had success in smaller leagues only to struggle in England.
Look at someone like Frank de Boer, he won four league titles with Ajax before getting the Crystal Palace job, but he lasted less than two months in the Premier League – sometimes that pedigree doesn’t translate.
Of course, Postecoglou is no De Boer, but to act as though success in Scotland, Australia and Japan means he will be able to compete at the very top of the Premier League is also remiss.
Time will tell whether or not Postecoglou can take this Tottenham team to the top.
