Tottenham Hotspur deployed scouts to observe outstanding Sporting CP midfielder/winger Pedro Goncalves play against Juventus Friday night, according to the Record.
The North London club has been keeping a close eye on the Portuguese forward in recent months, and despite the Liga Nos team losing the encounter 0-1 to Juventus, Goncalves presented a strong case to the N17 scouts.
Goncalves has been a revelation for Sporting this season, scoring 18 goals and assisting on 12 occasions across all competitions. His performances have not gone unnoticed, with Tottenham allegedly interested in signing him on a long-term contract.
The 24-year-old’s style of play would surely fit the Premier League, where the pace and brutality of the game require players who are fast on the ball and capable of scoring goals. Goncalves possesses both of these talents in abundance and has demonstrated his ability to perform at the highest level.
Tottenham’s recent form has been patchy, and the club’s hierarchy will be looking to make some shrewd acquisitions in the summer transfer window. Adding a player of Goncalves’ quality to their ranks could be just what they need to push on to the next level.
Tottenham’s major supplier of goals in recent seasons has been Son Heung-min, but he is now in his 30s, and the club needs to start thinking about a long-term alternative for him. Goncalves may be the ideal match, and his signing would underline the club’s intent.
If Tottenham sign Goncalves, they will be hoping that former Sporting CP midfielder Pedro Porro, whom we signed in January, can assist the young star in settling in. After all, adjusting to the English Premier League is not easy.
Tottenham might benefit greatly from Goncalves’ versatility. He has largely played as a right winger this season, but he is equally at home as a center attacking midfielder or as a striker.
