John Wenham is concerned by the form of Tottenham defender Cristian Romero this season.
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose believes a lot of the goals Ange Postecoglou’s side have conceded have been due to “mistakes” by Romero.
Tottenham let a 2-0 lead slip to lose 3-2 to Brighton at the Amex Stadium on Sunday (6 October), with Spurs’ defensive performance in the second half a real concern.
And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes Romero is continuing to make the same mistakes.
“Romero was poor against Brighton,” Wenham said.
“If you look at the goals we’ve conceded this season, quite a lot of them have come down to mistakes from Romero. Therefore, that is very concerning.
“During the first few games of the season, you can accept it, maybe there is a tiredness after the Copa America success in the summer.
“However, we’re into October now and he’s played quite a lot of games for Tottenham this season, yet we’re still seeing these same mistakes.”
Cristian Romero struggling for Tottenham so far this season
This isn’t the first time that Romero has been criticised this season. As a result, fans will no doubt be slightly concerned about the 26-year-old’s shaky form.
Romero is a top player in North London and a key part of the squad. Therefore, when he struggles, the rest of the team tends to struggle.
What will be of particular concern is the recent transfer speculation surrounding the World Cup winner (via TyC Sports, 9 September). Perhaps Romero already has one foot out of the door, which would explain his poor performances.
However, if he continues to perform like this, Spurs fans likely won’t lose much sleep about him leaving, with a potential replacement already mooted.
