Here we look at Daniel Levy’s and Tottenham’s transfer priorities this summer as they aim to refresh the current group for the incoming head coach and bring the Lilywhites back on track.
This season has demonstrated how much more has to be done in the transfer market for Tottenham to progress as a club. After bringing in seven players in the summer, the club added two more in January, with Pedro Porro and Arnaut Danjuma arriving from Sporting CP and Villarreal, respectively.
With seven games remaining in the season, Tottenham are still in contention for a top-four finish, but it will all come down to how they perform in the final stretch, with inconsistency bothering them since the season began. Cristian Stellini’s team should be higher than third after dropping points recently against struggling Wolves, Leicester City, Southampton, Everton, and Bournemouth.
So, what exactly does Daniel Levy need to do to become Tottenham’s next head coach before the summer transfer deadline?Take a peek at the video below.
Goalkeeper
One of Tottenham’s top priorities this summer will be to find a long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris. Spurs have yet to discover their ideal goalkeeper to take on the Frenchman’s gloves, but they must do so by the end of August.
Lloris has made a series of high-profile errors this season, and he is approaching the end of his career. Tottenham must prepare forward and assemble a club capable of competing for many years to come, beginning with a new goalkeeper.
Centre-back
Linked with Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni and RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol last summer, in the end Tottenham added Clement Lenglet to their backline after agreeing on a loan deal with Barcelona. The French international has played plenty of football since his switch to N17 but he is not a centre-back who is going to take Tottenham’s backline to the next level.
That’s what Spurs must do this summer if they are to move forward as a club. Tottenham need to bring in two top-quality centre-backs to play alongside Cristian Romero and form a mean backline in the process.
Another quality centre-back to provide cover would certainly suffice, although it’s hard to see wholesale changes in one particular position take place all in one transfer window. Players such as Davinson Sanchez, Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga could make way, with Lenglet possibly returning to the Camp Nou after his year in the capital.
Midfield
Three years after Christian Eriksen left Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for Inter Milan, Spurs have yet to sign a direct replacement. Spurs’ team has a distinct lack of creativity, with the onus squarely on Harry Kane to not only score but also assist.
Simply having an aggressive midfielder would offer Spurs choices and allow them to shift formations rather than sticking with the same system all the time. Many fans have urged the club to pursue a summer transfer for James Maddison, who will soon enter the final year of his Leicester City contract, allowing clubs to save money on the England international.
Another central midfielder could also be needed before the transfer window slams shut. This may all depend on what happens with Pape Matar Sarr ahead of next season as he could potentially head out on loan due to a lack of minutes, while there is of course the possibility that the new man at the helm could possibly want to keep Tanguy Ndombele or Giovani Lo Celso and have them as part of their squad going forward.
Tottenham fans have yet to see the best of Yves Bissouma since his summer move and the 2023/24 campaign will herald a fresh start for him after such a frustrating first year in the capital.
Attack
There will be some movement in the attacking department come the end of the campaign with Lucas Moura moving on for a new challenge and Arnaut Danjuma returning to Villarreal after his loan deal. Spurs do have the option in their agreement with the Yellow Submarines to sign the Netherlands international permanently, but a lack of regular football means the attacker unfortunately hasn’t had the minutes required to show Spurs why they should offer him a long-term deal.
As a result, Tottenham need bring in two new attackers if they want to have two players for each position, as Antonio Conte preferred. Bryan Gil might fill one of those roles if Tottenham decides to keep him once his loan term with Sevilla ends.
When given an opportunity by Conte at the start of the year, the Spain international demonstrated his talent, and the incoming head coach will have to make a judgment on him. Spurs will still be in the same situation with Gil, since his loan move to Sevilla means he has very little Premier League experience.
