Bryan King wasn’t impressed by Dominic Solanke’s overall performance as Tottenham beat Brentford 3-1 on Saturday, 21 September.
The ex-Spurs scout claims the striker would have been in “trouble” if he missed the opportunity which fell to him early in the first half.
Solanke grabbed his first Tottenham goal to equalise for the hosts in the eighth minute, tapping in from close range after James Maddison’s shot had been saved, with the midfielder himself coming under fire from King after what he did later in the match.
However, King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – didn’t see much else which caught his eye.
“For a £60million player, he couldn’t have missed that,” King said.
“I think there would have been some trouble if he did miss that. To be honest, I wasn’t impressed by his overall performance.
“Just like against Coventry City in midweek, I wasn’t impressed.”
Dominic Solanke scores first goal for Tottenham against Brentford
He was unable to find the back of the net during his first three matches and also saw an injury disrupt his start to the season.
At times against the Bees, he still struggled, despite getting on the scoresheet.
However, Ange Postecoglou will be hopeful that getting his first goal for the club will take some pressure off Solanke’s shoulders.
As a result, he might feel more relaxed at the club, which could see his overall performance start to improve.
Arriving as a brand-new striker for a big-fee puts a lot of pressure on a player. Therefore, Solanke will no doubt feel relieved to have opened his Spurs account. However, fans will still be expecting more.
