FABRIZIO ROMANO: Tottenham and Arsenal battling hard to sign English professional center-back

Spurs and Arsenal are both interested in signing Swansea City defender Nathan Wood at the end of the season.

This is according to Fabrizio Romano, who took to Twitter to reveal the interest in Wood.

According to Romano, both Arsenal and Tottenham are keeping a close eye on Wood’s performances in anticipation of a possible transfer.

However, Romano adds that Swansea are now attempting to re-sign Wood and prevent him from coming to London.

Swansea only recruited Wood from Middlesbrough last summer, paying only £400,000 to bring him to Wales.

If the Swans sell now, they can expect a large profit, and they may even consider orchestrating a bidding war between the two tough North London rivals.

Wood is the son of former Crystal Palace and Middlesbrough defender Dean Gordon, who was born in the North East.

Gordon played 63 league games for Boro, but Wood didn’t come close despite rising through the Middlesbrough levels.

Wood made only five league appearances for Boro before being moved to Swansea last summer.

That followed loan experiences with Crewe Alexandra and Hibernian, and few expected him to become a success following that.

Wood has been a standout for Swansea, playing on the right side of Russell Martin’s back three.

Martin has praised Wood this season, telling BBC Sport in March that the defender is “amazing.”

That will always attract interest, and both Arsenal and Tottenham appear to be preparing for a deal.

Wood, who is only 20 years old, has earned his first England Under-21 cap, and there should be more to come.

If Wood continues to grow and earns a huge Premier League move, he could gain England senior caps.
