£17m Tottenham first new face signing hit first step of medical successful

The Italian goalkeeper joins Spurs in a £17 million deal from Empoli, signing a five-year contract.

Tottenham Hotspur have announced the signing of Guglielmo Vicario in a £17 million deal with Serie A club Empoli.

The Italian goalkeeper is the first new face to join Ange Postecoglou’s team since the manager’s arrival from Celtic earlier this summer, following the permanent signing of Juventus loanee Dejan Kulusevski after an initial 18-month term.

Vicario, 26, has signed a five-year contract in north London until 2028 after passing a physical on Monday. He will wear the No13 shirt at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which was most recently worn by fellow goalkeeper Michel Vorm.

The transfer is conditional on Vicario, who has previously been called up to Roberto Mancini’s senior Italy squad but has yet to make his Azzurri debut, acquiring the requisite international clearance and a work visa.

Vicario’s hiring adds to the uncertainty surrounding Hugo Lloris’ future, with the long-serving Spurs captain’s contract expiring in a year and having publicly stated his desire for a fresh challenge.

It has long been speculated that the French goalkeeper could leave this summer, but it has also been said that Vicario will serve as his understudy for the upcoming season before donning the gloves full-time.

Vicario leaves Empoli having made 71 appearances for the club since arriving on loan from Cagliari in 2021. In his homeland, he has also played for Udinese, Fontanafredda, Venezia, and Perugia.
